20/10/2005 AFEW signs statement calling for action on tuberculosis
AFEW has signed on to a statement to the 36th Union World Congress on Lung Health that calls for a ‘revolution in tuberculosis (TB) prevention, care and treatment’. TB is closely linked to the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Eastern Europe and Central Asia. Around the world each year, 8 million people contract TB and 2 million die from it. The statement appeals for expanded access to TB treatment, services for vulnerable populations (including people living with HIV/AIDS) and the expansion of existing and the development of new diagnostic tools. It also calls for the turning of ‘declarations into deeds and promises into programmes’. The Congress is being held in Paris on 18–22 October.
19/10/2005 Telethon ‘It’s Time to Live!’ organisers award Vladimir Pozner
The annual conference for professional managers of television companies, ‘The Logic of Success’, took place 10 October 2005 in Zolotoye Koltso hotel in Moscow. During the conference representatives of HIV/AIDS service organisations participating in the ‘It’s Time to Live!’ project awarded Vladimir Pozner with an honorary diploma. The ‘It’s Time to Live’ telethon was launched 1 December 2004 (World AIDS Day), on Channel One, and is successfully continuing in the regions. It was largely due to Vladimir Pozner’s contribution that this project became a reality. During his talk shows on local television stations, organised by the non-profit organisations taking part in the project, Vladimir Pozner raises serious questions about the growth of HIV/AIDS epidemic in Russia. Invited guests – politicians, medical specialists, religious leaders and ordinary citizens of Russian towns – participate in heated discussions on issues such as access to treatment for people living with HIV/AIDS; discrimination; living conditions of children born to HIV-positive mothers; governmental programmes aimed at effectively hampering the epidemic. Talk shows with Vladimir Pozner and Elena Khanga were broadcast in St Petersburg, Ulan-Ude, Ylyanovsk, Tver, Krasnoyarsk and Kazan. Future telethons are in the works for Niznhy Novgorod, Volgograd, Novosibirsk, Tomsk, Barnaul, Orenburg, Pskov and other Russian cities.

A new safer sex campaign for young people "Show them!"
"So that’s it! We’ve got clones. Each of us has one, or even more. They seem like normal people. They dress fashionably, they party next door. The only difference is that they never use condoms. What savages! Don’t let a clone take your place. A natural, reliable defence is to use a condom."
A new media campaign was prepared by the FOCUS-MEDIA Foundation with consultative support from AFEW under the GLOBUS project. For the first time, an information campaign on HIV/AIDS prevention and the promotion of safer sexual behaviour will take place not only in Moscow, but also in ten regions of Russia under the GLOBUS project: Buryatiya, Krasnoyarsk Region, Orenburg Region, Pskov Region, St. Petersburg, Tartarstan, Tomsk Region, Tver Region and Vologda Region. The principal aim of the campaign is to improve young people’s knowledge about HIV-infection and to explain methods of protecting oneself against it. The most reliable method is to use a condom: it protects against unwanted pregnancy, HIV and other sexually transmitted infections. A new media campaign ‘Show them!’ like the five preceding campaigns has been designed on the basis of research. It has shed light on several important trends: firstly, at present young people between the ages of 15 and 25, and especially girls between the ages of 15 and 18, are at an ever increasing risk of being infected with HIV through sexual contact. They know less than other groups about how HIV is transmitted and how one can protect oneself. Secondly, people are entering into sexual relations at a younger age. Young people continue to feel awkward buying condoms and discussing safe sex with their parents and friends. What’s more, a high level of fatalism has been noted amongst young people – a significant number of those surveyed said, ‘If I’m fated to get HIV, then a condom won’t help me.’ This is largely due to an absence of reliable information about HIV/AIDS. All the information materials for ‘Show them!’ were designed with these trends in mind.
28/04/2005 В Москве состоялся семинар "Введение в антиретровирусную терапию" для десяти регионов проекта ГЛОБУС
С 13 по 16 апреля в Москве прошел обучающий семинар "Введение в антиретровирусную терапию", организованный Открытым Институтом Здоровья совместно со "СПИД Фондом Восток-Запад" (AFEW), в рамках компонента по лечению ВИЧ/СПИДа проекта ГЛОБУС.
В ходе семинара региональные медицинские и немедицинские специалисты получили разностороннюю информацию и навыки предоставления антиретровирусной терапии. Семинар также ставил перед собой цель способствовать формированию региональных междисциплинарных команд по лечению, состоящих из врачей, медсестер, социальных работников и консультантов, работающих по принципу "равный обучает равного".
В семинаре приняли участие медицинские специалисты и социальные работники Центров СПИД, представители сообщества ЛЖВС регионов-участников проекта ГЛОБУС, а также российские и международные эксперты по АРВ-терапии, представители ВОЗ, специалисты Открытого Института Здоровья и AFEW.
